Was it The Light in the Attic? I think that was the title. I don't remember the dragonfly creature but the egg shaped creature and the massive elephant I remember from a book that had poems.

If it is not that maybe it is by the same author. I think there were others in a series or that were similar by the same person.

I think the egg creature had the elephant/mammoth creature on a chain in one part. That doesn't help figure out the book but I just remembered that.

Nah, not that either - the book I'm looking for was just by one author, rather than a compilation.

Now it's kinda driving me crazy in that 'why can't I find this' sort of way. Do you remember anything else? I have the same problem myself with a book by a Danish author... I remember a boy and a forest with cone people. It'll haunt me forever.
