Okay, I haven't read the Death Note manga, and I've only seen the first dvd of the anime, but I have been reading some of the fanfiction - or more accurately, crossover fanfiction - and something is bugging me.

This thirteen-day rule, where it says "If a person does not write a name in the Death Note within thirteen days of writing the previous name

Shinigami take human lives to extend their own. The 13 day rule is basically "Don't die of starvation."

Well, yeah, but they're capable of taking more than thirteen days worth of someone's life. I still think asking "when was the last time you wrote in the notebook" is a valid one to ask the shinigami.
