:D

Yeah, but what the hell's up with that whistling noise they make all the time?

The hens at work basically have three noises: the contented bok bok bok, the angry muttering bok bok bok, and the outraged squawk. The cockerel's got those three, plus crowing. I've never heard this many different weird noises come out of a chicken before!

The outraged squawk also doubles as the OH SHIT AN EGG IS COMING OUT OF MY ASS Y'ALL squawk. It's a hardworking squawk that way.

Maybe a chicken version of the communication noises feral children make. Wonder how much chicken 'language' is learnt from adult animals. Some of the more intelligent birds learn their individual call in the egg, so maybe hens deprived of any adult contact just copy random noises they each make.

Sounds good! I love how you say they're in better state than you feared, sounds massively grim. Will their beaks grow back properly with good care like the rest of them?

Googling, it seems unlikely. They have powdered food in deep bowls that they can scoop up, though.

Yeah... there's trimming, which we had to keep having done with one of the pheasants at work, because he had some kind of beak problem where it grew super-fast and the top and bottom beaks crossed over and stopped him eating properly. That's temporary like cutting nails, so he was off to see his friend the vet every couple of months. But I think the de-beaking they do with a hot blade fucks up the growing base of the beak, so it doesn't grow back. I think Dippy just got lucky.

They were all preening their feathers today, though, which is one of the things de-beaking can mess with, so that's good.

Glad you have food sorted out but UGH to the beaks being damaged deliberately I didn't realise that. I haven't eaten non allegedly freerange eggs in ages although I suspect battery eggs are in pre processed food :( *shudder*

Hi Lorna. Thanks for reposting all the Troy Davis stuff. I've added you as a friend, hope that's ok. Congrats on the rescue hens - hope they're still doing well.
