Mean Spirited Crip;>.....

Recently, I got "A Talking To" by a woman that was APPPAAAALLLLEEEED that I, a Disabled Person made a snide comment about another Disabled Person. I didn't say anything to her because she wouldn't recognise a "Clue" if it picked her up in a bar and slept over, but ( Read more... )

This seems like a moment to offer our community 'a licence to educate via the medium of heavy kicks to the shins.'

(thanks for that bon mot, sushidog)

One thing I've noticed about the folks at FC is that we're less likely to cover for our communities less Ethical members, unlike many other lists and groups I've belonged to in the last 25+ yrs. A Good Person is a Good Person, no matter what their Physical or Mental "platform".

You're the person who most helped me with this. As you know I've been disabled for less time than you have. As my condition worsened it didn't occur to me to doubt whether the disabled people and groups that I met would be, in some sense, 'there for me'. After one of the spats that took me so much by surprise, you pointed out that being a crip doesn't necessarily make a person any different from the person they already were. I found that very helpful and it led to me starting friendly_crips.

So in a sense, you're to credit for this comm existing at all! And it seems apt that you're the first person to call us by an acronym. Hello FC!

I appreciate the complement;>!
Back when I was still teaching(in my Spiritual tradition),I tried to get my students to THINK. There's a Human defect that makes us assume those like us are "Like Us". I sometimes call it wearing "ME" coloured glasses;>. And when those like us don't act like us, we tend to give excuses to Others for their behavior until they do something really egregious, then we say they're "Not one of Us". They ARE. Just Bad.
Back in the 80's I used to Paraphrase a bit from a Newage Humor book, "Just because They''re Dead, doesn't make them Smart". Just as true is folks may not be who/what they say they are. I've run into folks at social assistance orgs who I KNEW weren't Disabled but simply said they were to take materials truly needed by others. It's this sad experience why I don't mind all the "hoops" I have to jump nowadays to get services....

Pat

No one should be protected if they are being a dickhead, crip or not.

I'd like there to be at least one tag on this post but I'm not sure what tag would be appropriate. Perhaps I should make a new one. What would you like?

Since I never tag anything I have no idea how one would choose to do so;>

Ok I'll invent a tag and put it on. Btw when you post a new entry, you should see a ticky-box 'Edit this entry's tags' or some such, and you can go back to an existing entry and find a similar ticky-box. I like tags because they make it easy to search entries on keywords.

it's understandible when you've been Abused to strike back and most Minorities of any kind(Physical, Ethnic, Spiritual, Sexual, etc)have experienced stuff that makes them bitter. God/desses Know I have;>! It's when we pretend that we're Pure and everyone else isn't that's a problem. Humans are Humans and let's face it, we haven't socially changed that much since our 1st Ancestors Sacavenged the kills of larger Predators. It's when we pretend we're Not and everyone else is that we get into trouble.
We can transend Genetics by being Civilized and part of BEING Civilized is Policing your Own. Personally? I've always been a big fan of Shunning. You are simply Choosing not to support the other person's Behavior. And as I've said in a previous post, there's a BIG difference in not Knowing or Recognising something's Innapropriate and knowing AND CHOOSING to do so....
Cheers,
Pat
