I believe that it was one of their basic human rights to make this decision for themselves. I don't actually believe that I or anyone else even has the right to voice a negative opinion of this decision.
It's not, like some are treating it, a huge can of worms. It's a fundamental human right to make this decision. A decision that they did not shy away from and no doubt came after a huge amount of soul-searching.
It's not our place, and especially the place of uninvolved so-called experts, to disagree with their decision.
I feel like there's this odd tension in the disability community - at least here in the States - between independence/autonomy and a sense that people with disabilities are vulnerable to being taken advantage of by a system that allows euthanasia and might be seeking a way "out" because they aren't getting enough community support. Most people seem to support the latter (or at least the vocal ones do), which sometimes make me feel unwelcome in my opinions. Personally, I was raised with a family that believed in a person's right to choose to end their life with a doctor's help - my mother had cancer for ten years and was very passionate about the issue - and so I am in favor of an individual's right to choose what is correct for them; in the end, only that person can know best what is the right course of action. even if it were ONLY the emotional pain, they would still have the right to choose, in my opinion. i have glaucoma and cannot take some medications. i have liver damage and cannot take some medications.
those two things deprive me of thing which would ease my life and make it easier to life...that and the stupidity of law.

those two things deprive me of thing which would ease my life and make it easier to life...that and the stupidity of law.
