"Hmmm..." she wondered, pensively.

So I'm having a problem with the Mentalist in season 2, and the problem is this...

Does everything have to be a set up??? Including all character conflict??

Spoilery? )

Well, but what wasn't a setup was when he comes to her apartment to help her and she has a mini-breakdown, which I felt was a very interesting character moment (it is the way that I would break down in that situation, rather than drinking and shouting and threatening suicide, and I identify heavily with Lisbon, so I liked its subtlety).

I agree. I did love that scene. It was very real and quite heartbreaking, but I felt that they didn't capitalise on it enough or see it through to resolution. And the resolution we thought we were getting was all fake. I would've been happy even if Jane and Lisbon had then dealt with the real issues that were brought up, or at least alluded to them, but the way it ended I think we were deprived of that. To me the 'tra-la-la donuts' ending negated anything that had been built up earlier :(

Yeah, I definitely agree with you there. I think because the show is considered "light" (although there's plenty that is dark in there, god knows) deeper character stuff does get glossed over, especially for characters-that-are-not-Jane. It's part of the reason I don't watch it regularly anymore.

I am enjoying watching it for the fun aspect at the moment, so I think I'm going to have to bite my knuckles and try not to get too frustrated with it. Or maybe just give in to the temptation to write dark!fic... :D
