He said he’d always be mine. And I know that “always” means something so much different now, but I never doubted. Jacob would be there when I went back.

I didn’t realize it had been 50 years. When you have eternity stretching ahead of you, time passes without notice. I always thought it would drag.

When I walked through the woods near Jacob’s old house, I could smell him. But I wanted to see him. To see him smile in a way that meant he still loved me. Always.

But I was too late. His wife stood in the window.
