I made a terrible, terrible mistake.

When my electricity went out, I neglected to clean out my freezer post haste. In fact, it was the last thing on my mind ( Read more... )

Don't bother with Lysol, go straight for ammonia. It's cheap, and it'll actually get the stench out instead of just covering ti up. Dilute it 1:10 with water, sprinkle baking soda thickly inside the freezer and then spritz it with ammonia water and leave it overnight.

Put a bowl of dry coffee in there. My freezer got unplugged by accident a few weeks ago and the coffee grounds did the trick.

I've tried that with minor smells, and it did well. But I honestly don't know if they can overpower the very very terrible funk of raw chicken breasts and raw bread dough sitting in a confined freezer space for over a week.

another person recommended a thick layer of baking soda hit with ammonia water. I'm going to try that. If I can cut the stench in half, I might have a chance to get it out.

Seriously, its BAD.

Oh, mine was fucked UP. It was unplugged for days before the funk started seeping out. There was a three-inch layer of...god knows what-all in the bottom! Chicken and ground beef and BLAH! It's a chest freezer, so it seals pretty well and didn't stink for a while.

It's horrible cleaning it out, innit? (shudders)

My old refrig. freezer stood open for a week once, while I was on vacation. There were flies and maggots everywhere. I burned sticks of nag champra in the freezer with the door shut and it seemed to work! :) Something that can penetrate into the foam core of the fridge...

I've got about a half inch of god knows what on the bottom. I haven't tried to clean it yet, because I had to leave the house. I'm on my way back over there. I hope the stench has, I dunno, withered some..

Coffee! It works!

Also Odoban. Put some on tissues and put them ALL OVER THE HOUSE!

Okay. I put the baking soda and ammonia water mix in there, and letting it set overnight. Then I will clean it out (wow, thats gonna suck). After that, I'm quite sure some smell will remain, I will put in the coffee.

And then I shall live happily ever after.

What is this Odoban of which you speak?

You can get it at the Evil Smiley Empire... I mean Walmart.

if everyone else's suggestions don't work, or if there is still a stench left in the house when they do, i would add that you could see about renting an ozone machine somewheres. (lots of house painters or manufacturers of rather toxic or smelly things have them, i've even heard that Walmart grocerystores have started to use them in their backrooms)
you have to run it alone in a closed up house for at least twelve hours, but it will remove the smell of anything. basically because it changes the nature of all the air particles in the house on an atomic level.

Ozone will do the trick, but may be even more dangerous than chemicals. If you use something like that, make sure your not in the house while it is operating. Remember that ozone is one of the most dangerous components of smog.

i did say use the machine alone in a closed home didn't i? we use ozone machines at my work to reduce the chemical sensitivity some people have to some of the glues we have to use to make our products. ozone machines, while not something to use just whenever you feel like it, are incrediably useful for certiain kinds of issues when used properly. plus, the machines usually have tons of warning labels all over them for the reasons you mentioned.
