This misconception is similar to the one about the Vanir being fertility deities. It is partially true, but only partially. It narrows and reduces Freyja’s powers to three attributes. I really agree with this. Like a lot.

I really identify with her as a grieving lover, which isn't sex, magic, or war. She's also a fire goddess. She is so much besides those three.

On the other hand, she is most seriously not the same as Sjofn in my experience. Sjofn is very much more rigid and interested in ornamentation than Freyja. Freyja, while she can be quite rigid when she needs to, tends to go with the flow more. Lofn I don't know about. I've only had one experience with her that could have easily been either Sjofn or Freyja.

I think that Freyja, Sjofn, Lofn, and Var are all three really good friends who hang out and gossip about love.

Thanks for the feedback and sharing your experiences of Sjofn and Lofn. My reflections were on Snorri's text rather than personal experiences. Perhaps after I, like you, actually spend some time with them I'll feel differently. I'll let you know!
