Book Suggestions

OK My daughter Alex has to do her first book report. She just started 5th grade but has only just turned ten. She is on the slower side for reading, in other words it takes her longer to read a book then most and she hasn't gotten the reading and remembering what just happened down just yet. I must say the teacher came up with an interesting way

They did this with both of my daughters when they were in 3rd grade the same sandwich thing and all. First does she have a set of reading levels she can pick from? Depending on what the school's norm is, they usually do a test in the first two weeks to find out what level of books to recommend outside of the class curriculum. For example when my youngest was in 3rd grade hers was 3.1-5.4 so she could read books and do reports on any book between those levels 3rd grad through early 5th. If there is a particular book between the levels she is allowed to read at (for school work of course) that she has already read and like I would suggest going for that one.

they haven't done the what reading level are you at this year test yet. Thought she usualy falls at the end of the previous year to beginging of the current year. It is usualy just far enough behind to make reading a bit slow for her.

I still suggest a book that she has read before to make it a bit easier.

When I was in third grade, I loved Sideways Stories from Wayside School. I was in an advanced reading class at the time, so maybe this would work for Alex.

One thing I DO remember reading in fifth grade was Maniac Magee and we read that as a class.

Number the Stars is also very good and I think it's a bit shorter than Maniac Magee. It's one I still actually own even though it's in storage right now.

I love the Secret Garden still too. It was another one I read in third grade but my DRPs always had my reading level five years ahead of where I actually was (too bad I couldn't be that way with math!).

I'd probably go with Number the Stars. It's the shortest book out of all of those (maybe only a 1/4 of an inch thick) and it's about two female best friends. :)

I would say that War and Peace could work, except that I fall asleep reading it... wait, no, that works well for killing bugs, like the big ones, like spiders. big spiders that can steal your cereal bowl. its true.

Things aren't too bad around here. Though its getting a bit frustraiting that almost everytime I turn the pc on I have missed you yet again. So when is a good time to catch you?
