XF fanvid: "Goodbye"

Jan 04, 2010 20:44

I don't know what I can say for myself with this vid. It's like I set myself several challenges: to vid a song with no narrative, to vid a song without imposing a narrative, and to vid a song using all the most obscure and contextless clips I could find in The X-Files (that were still visually meaningful). Since I didn't think I could set the song ( Read more... )

Thanks, I really enjoyed this! To me, it feels like a crystallisation of their everyday experience - all the immensely important bits which are left when all the specific 'Do you remember when?'s have been washed away.

I adore the bit in the middle with all the smiling. *melts*

I think this has more of a narrative than you intended. I only watched it through once, but I don't recall seeing a single clip where they were in either of their apartments, or even in the office. It was all roadtrips and cases! Walking up to something, walking away from something, exchanging glances while on the job, and so very much DRIVING and stakeouts and having conversations in cars. My initial reaction is that this video is about their life on the road, their life as FBI partners when they were getting to know each other, on days when everything was pretty mundane and uneventful. No aliens, no cancer, no Syndicate, no abductions, no drama and angst and heartbreak. Just... driving to their next destination, investigating whatever needed to be investigated, and discovering each other along the way ( ... )

Yes! I'm pleased you noticed all that. Some of that was intentional - all the walking and moving around and car-driving - because one of my early ideas was to try and use only clips that happened outside (because I wanted to make it evokative of Vancouver). Then I thought I'd have sections of car clips, motel clips, walking clips, office clips, talking clips - but as you noticed, I ended up not using any office clips, and most of the other themes just got scattered into different parts. But yeah, I deliberately stayed away from anything about the mytharc or even the more particular MOTWs, because I wanted to try and concentrate all the anonymous moments and get that sense of pure being-together-ness.

So in short! Thanks a bunch for this comment, I'm happy to see that my ideas got through. And I'm glad you think the YouTube version is okay!

And what's neat about staying away from mytharc or iconic MOTWs is that there are a LOT of clips here that I can't quite 100% put my finger on, though I can guess seasons based on hair or clothes. And that adds to the "pure being-together-ness" of it, in that I'm not going off on mental tangents based on specific episodes or scenes.

Ooh, I love it! 'I can't remember if we said goodbye' - so perfect. ♥.

.. is the download in a weird format thought? WMP won't play it for me, and in the Divx player the last 20 seconds or so are cut off. Hmm. I'm gonna try redownloading.

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed :D

Yeah, I was waiting to see if anyone would have problems. It's probably the file itself, so I'll try and compress another one and see if I'm still getting the same issue.

Oh my goodness, I love Emmylou Harris. This is a great, heavy video. I particularly liked how the clips weren't chronological, which made it more fragmented, but enhanced its obscurity... if that makes any sense to you at all.

Have you every heard Tragedy by Emmylou Harris?
