new trend of Arthur mentally and emotionally destroying Merlin
I am completely behind with fics, not to mention the Big Bang *headdesk*
But srsly ? There is a trend ? Hmmm ... I don't like rapist!Arthur cos it's really over the edge. The whole point of Merlin fics is to create a sort of parallel to the original series, right ? I mean as far as the character's personality and particular type of behaviour are concerned...

I've noticed a big rise in rapist!Arthur fics, and requests. Like I said, I wrote one, so I suppose that I'm guilty as well, but it was for the dark!fic challenge for summerpornathon - I wanted to try my hand at dark!Arthur, because we all know I love dark!Merlin so much. But I think I did an alright job keeping Arthur in character; all the reviews I got seem to say so, at least...

Anyhow, I agree that it's really OOC for him; I hated writing it, tbh.

Sweetheart, I'm sure you did a great job and I don't think that the whole idea is bad. Dark!Arthur could be awesome and I'm sure I've read some amazing dark!Arthur fics as well<3 What I wanted to say is that it should be somehow justified by the story and not the goal in itself...

I'm drinking my first coffee so my answer may not be as clear as I would wish to LOL
Speaking of coffee - you made this awesome icon (I love you like I love coffee) and I can't find it on my hard drive. Did you post it anywhere by any chance ?

Ooh, coffee... I can't wait to get to work... lol
That icon... it would seem that I did not upload it. u_u; Sorry luv!! The next time I drag my desktop out, I will make sure to get it! ^^;

I would like to read some good dark!Arthur. I'm sure it's possible to do it - not to sound conceited, but I think I managed it pretty well in the Two Sides of the Coin drabbles and sequel - I just don't think rape is the way to do it. Especially not when all that is accomplished is the rape. *shrugs* I don't know - I guess I'd like there to be a purpose for it, or for the author to make a good case for it, give me the reasons for the darkness, please! ^^; (I hope that comes across clearly. I haven't had any coffee yet, so who knows! lol)

I prefer my dark!Merlin to be the result of some severe trauma, personally. But you're right, I don't see him consciously choosing that route. There's one prompt at the comm that asks for an AU where magic isn't outlawed, and Merlin is entirely amoral and will use his magic to get what he wants because of that. The way it's phrased makes it sound as if the only thing that gives Merlin any morality at all is the law against magic. And I really don't see that fitting with his personality. Even if he were to go dark, I think that it would still be in service of Arthur or doing what he believes to be the right thing, like you said.

One thing, though: what is with this new trend of Arthur mentally and emotionally destroying Merlin? How is turning Arthur into a rapist for the sake of it keeping him in character? (Yeah, I did it, but that was for a challenge, it was only a tiny aspect of his personality blown out of proportion, and I felt HORRIBLE afterwards.) Just - WHY?

Rape!fic does squick me too. I don't mind a bit of h/c, but not the whole "Arthur brutalising Merlin" thing. Its nasty. Having been in an abusive relationship myself its not something I want to read about . . .

Good luck at work! Don't drink too much coffee, lol! <3

NO SUCH THING!! XD

I think there was only one rape!fic I managed to enjoy, and the rape only happened as a result of a spell and Arthur absolutely hated himself after. It was a really spectacular h/c fic. But for the most part, I say that it is more than possible to have h/c, even non-con h/c, without butchering anyone's character to achieve it.
