Oh yes, and... anonymous January 22 2006, 23:06:07 UTC
I'd just like to plug the last book I read in th' '05, "The Year of Magical Thinking", by Joan Didion. I've had this unconscious aversion to her because, uh...she's named Joan, but I'm a fan now.

It's a deeply affecting and beautifully crafted chronicle of the year she spent grieving the death of her daughter. I couldn't read it on the train or at work, I had to spend time with it at home because it's just such a cathartic read. I was considering lending it to Mom, but...no; no.

I'd suggest it though.

I've reached my memoir-reading limit for a while. To paraphrase Marvin the Robot from
    Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
(very paraphrased, because I haven't read that book since grade 8) "Reality is terrible enough. Why would anyone want to make more of it?"

Joan Didion is, IMHO, America's Greatest Living Author, if only for "Slouching Toward Bethlehem". Screw that Mailer guy.

And Vidal Gore- I heard he likes men! I mean, come on, let's face it...

What? Did I say something? 8P

I loved it, it was "the color of water" a non-fiction book about a guy who found out his mom was white and Jewish. I mean, he knew she was white, but he finds out her whole history. Really good. Other than that I'm re-reading Chinese Cuisines, time-life book from the 60s, that has no photos or stories about China because China was closed then. I used to read novels, that was a year or so ago. Don't know what happened. Sudoku Happened, maybe.

I liked it. I got some good suggestions, and it was a fun read.

But you know me well enough to know that one book ain't gonna cut it. Mostly, it was more organization porn.
