This is brilliant. Your language and imagery are exquisite. I tried to start quoting but I would only paste the entire story here. Just know that each new passages made this reader absolutely gasp with the pleasure of the words.

I'm... I'm speachless. This was so beautiful. Wonderfully, tragically beautiful and Oh, oh so plausible an end. You say so much in so few words, convey all of their history in such concise sentences. Stunning.

Oh, I really like this. Your rendering of Inara really rings true here, and I absolutely love this sentence (I read it, like, five million times before I could move on): And she’s saying goodbye, silently - to the shuttle that was never fully hers, to the ship she loves, to the man who might have been both... Sigh.

And if this isn't dead-on perfect Mal, I don't know what is: There wasn't another in creation so determined to prove that he had nothing to prove.
