Well, he was 84 so not that unexpected for a man, but still shocking indeed.

I've only read his "The Name of the Rose" - but that book was thoroughly engrossing. I reread it again when I was hospitalized in 2007. It's true, you see new layers upon layers in such a reread.

I think he had a wonderful life for a man whose childhood happened under Mussolini's rule.
I never met him, but I'm sad to think there will never be another book by Umberto Eco.
