It's very protective. She used to sleep with him while he was in his crib in spite of the parents removing her - when they'd go back she'd be back sleeping next to him.
She's a fierce little thing. That dog didn't know what hit him!
It isn't unusual for cats to attack much bigger animals. It's all in the head.
I'm a bit sad that the dog will be put down(maybe there would be a way to re-educate him?), but the kid was lucky that his cat was around to rescue him.
Although I am a cat person, I like dogs too, but there are indeed so many scary stories about dogs suddenly going nuts and attacking toddlers or kids, causing severe facial damages or death.
