“They’re demons,” the man spat, twisting his knife into the dirt. The crowd around him murmured their agreement, and Ranulf shook his head.
“No. They walk on two legs, like us. You only fear and slander what you don’t know…” he explained, ignoring the fearful cries that came from his men. “There have always been wolves in these woods, and they remain just that. Wolves.”
His captains laughed, and the youngest among them sneered as he spoke. “If you’re so sure of their humanity, why will you not face them?”
Ranulf lifted his chin, his eyes hardening. “Perhaps I will.”
