Nikola's - on the floor of the lab with a bottle of wine trying to fit together a damaged sensor - one of the roaming abnormals had gotten into it last night and had a chew - very irritating.

"It's open," he muttered.

"Do you have any idea how much trouble I'm going to be in if I keep dragging Ashley out on missions and she gets injured? Helen will have my head..." And there, Nikola is not kidding.

"Do you have any better ideas?" Kate asked, sighing frustratedly.

[nikolat3sla]

"Only Declan but something tells me that if I try and pull that Ashley will pull a Helen on me."

Kate shrugged, "Do you think Morgana would be in for it?"

Even after their last talk, Kate still wasn't sure the younger woman would jump through any hoops to help her out.

"She's not keen on letting me wander off on my own at the present," he replied quietly. "And believe it or not, Ms Freelander, despite what happened, she still cares for you."

"She sure has a funny way of showing it", Kate afforded a weak laugh, trying to break up the seriousness of the conversation for a moment. Glass cuts and forced viewing of vivisections aside, she supposed that Morgana wasn't avoiding her entirely was something to go on.

"If Morgana didn't care for you at all she would have dangled you out one of the Sanctuary windows and let you tumble to your doom..."

There was a small smile on his lips.

"One of the dangers of befriending a telekinetic lady."

Kate offered a weak smile, before leaning her chin on her hands, string pensively at the opposite wall.

"Doesn't matter, not asking you to do this for me anyway", she murmured softly.

"It is not as if I have a choice..." Nikola said quietly. He's not a bad person, not really at the heart of it all.

"There's always a choice", Kate muttered softly, "Just not always a good one."

Neither is she, the difference is she's spent a long time trying to be.

"True... But the difficult one is usually the right one in cases such as these. Your brother is innocent in all of this - the Sanctuary will do it's best to protect him - that is what we are here for - the entire purpose of our existence."

"Yeah, I get that", Kate murmured darkly, meaning implicit. The easy decision back at that Cabal base would have been to leave them there, strengthen her alliance with pretty much the most ruthless heavy hitter on the planet, and make off with a huge pay day and not a scratch.

But she hadn't, and somehow even now it hadn't occurred to her to regret that decision.

"We'll organise for you to have weapons..." Nikola says slowly, "otherwise Whitcomb will be suspicious. We want to keep this clean, and maybe bring in Dana if possible... If not, we kill her. Throw another spanner in their works. Finding new management is never easy."

"She's used to me packing, shouldn't raise any red flags", Kate assured him.

"We'll need an exit strategy - if something goes wrong," Nikola pointed out. "A way to get you out of there."
