I think we'll see 5th edition D&D in 2013, or 2012 if sales decline faster than expected. 5th edition will be the next iteration of 4th edition, as tightly related to it as 3.5 was to 3.0. This new edition will have no OGL or GSL.

When 6th edition rolls around (in, I dunno, 2016 or 2017), it will abandon the 4E structure entirely and go back to ( Read more... )

The question is not when 5th Edition will come out, but who will hold the license when it does.

Bingo. The only publisher I'd be surprised to see with it at that point would be Hasbro.

Unless 4E just really fails, I expect Hasbro to keep publishing D&D.

Agreed. nightfall_sage November 2 2008, 22:23:58 UTC
Unless 4E starts to fail miserable, I don't see Hasbro giving this up just yet. That said...with the state of the global economy and the rough times ahead...it's possible Hasbro might just cut their losses and try to go back to making toys.

*pauses* Who am I kidding...

I don't think so. I think editions will get closer together, so there won't really be room for half steps.

And with the a players handbook coming out yearly, I think instead we'll see a 4.1, 4.2, etc.

(provided they are still planning to do that)

As late as 2012/2013? I know Greywulf is predicting as early as 2010 (http://blog.microlite20.net/2008/11/01/will-dd-save-or-die/), which seems soon to me but I wouldn't be surprised about 2011. I think they will definitely start thinking of the core/books more like Magic: The Gathering, where the base revs really weren't too different. Core set, expansion, expansion, new core set ( ... )
