So, okay, maybe I hated that a little. But not as much as I should have, damn it.

I have this reaction to things a lot. "WHY CAN I NOT HATE THIS WITH THE INTENSITY WITH WHICH IT DESERVES TO BE REVILED?"

Maybe the fact that the heroine was so strong and never needed to be rescued made the fact that the hero kept calling her "child" less irritating, because she didn't actually seem child-like?

And YES about old books - especially old books that aren't classics - bridging the gaps.

That's probably it. Petnames generally make me gag, whether they're baby or honey or whatever, and the girl, little girl nonsense was slightly annoying, but it didn't really ignite my feminist rage.

But thinking back on it, Jerry is never infantalized or portrayed in any way as dependent or incapable of fending for herself. There are no aggravating instances of her needing to be shown how to ride a horse or shoot a gun or whatever, so, yeah, his "little girl" somehow got a pass from me.
