I've been reading Tom Wolfe's series of essays, Hooking Up, on loan from my dad, who urged me to read them. (If you read the blurb, don't be misled - it's not really a cantankerous rant on how the country is going to hell in a handbasket, I promise.) Yes, that is really what I mean - a lot of times, I think people come up with similar ideas. Sometimes, they are doing this directly from the same inputs, and sometimes, from varied inputs to one another. I think it's a bit too precious to try to draw clear lines like this just because two people had the same idea, no matter the geographical coincidence.
