But 68 CHAPTERS??? Holy cow! I've never managed more than 15, even in my 85,000 word pieces. I'd lose my mind (or the plot thread) with more, I think...
And yes, the Avengers fandom loves the Son of Coul. "Skies Over Manhattan" probably did as well as it did because of the last few paras ... They love him almost as much as they adore any kind of slash pairing, even the most unlikely and OOC ones. No judgment here, just sayin'. ;-)
It's not just 68 chapters. It's an entire universe. The main story clocked in at 68 chapters, which was broken into five parts (named for the Greek Titans). It took me two years and change to write it, and one of the years I was unemployed. But it also has something like 20 side-stories, including one that's 47k. I wasn't working off of an official outline, but I did have a beta reader and I worked my tail off to make sure there was continuity in that sucker (there had to be; there was a sucker punch twist in Chapter 54).
It's funny because I see a lot of stories that get hundreds of kudoses on AO3 and then I realize they're either about Steve, Tony, or Coulson, and I'm less interested. I enjoy our little Clintasha corner of the fandom. I think I'm happiest there. But they do definitely show their appreciation for the Son of Coul.
Holy cow. My biggest single piece is 85k (although it's part of a 'verse that adds up). I've been writing for only two years, mostly on planes and for a few hours in the evenings or on weekends, in between cuddling my kid. All strictly amateur ... ;-)
Would love to give your Chuck stuff a try 'coz I love your writing, but I know nothing about it other than that the guy who played Tom Paris on Star Trek Voyager (Robert Duncan McNeill) was one of the producers, and a frequent director.
And YES! to the slice of the Avengers fandom we occupy. I only tend to play the hits-and-kudoses comparison game within that small corner (the Voyager stuff I only put on AO3 for completeness' sake, and not even all of it -- it sure gets no love).
What I do find interesting (have no comparison) is the totality of famdomness generated by characters played by Jeremy Renner -- from Unusuals and MI:4 to Bourne, Hawkeye and now Hansel, and especially all the crossovers. The man is his own industry.
Yeah, it was always kind of amusing to see which Star Trek people showed up on the show because of the RDM connection. My biggest dream was for Jeri Ryan to somehow be related to Sarah Walker, the main spy character, but even though they joked about it on Twitter, it never happened. Though in the Trek vs. Star Wars war, Star Wars won, as they got Luke Skywalker for the fifth season premiere.
I do recommend at least the first couple of seasons of Chuck. If you stop after season two, it's one of the greatest shows ever written. You could even treat select episodes from the next three seasons as stand-alones, and it'd work (all of the characters spend seasons three through five playing intramural sports with the Idiot Ball). All of my Chuckfic is AU, actually, so I'd say only Fates requires canonical knowledge of the series and that's because there are a lot of in-jokes. Walker's Eleven is actually so far removed that I'm adapting it to an original novel, and Set, Spike, Dive! is just the Chuck characters at the Olympics (and it's
