It was, but the only rule of the challenge was that one character had to hate Valentine's Day. So there were a lot of ways the stories could go from there. And I'm really intrigued by the idea that what I wrote allows for a different reading - or even several different readings - beyond the idea I started with. I know I personally have a tendency to get hung up on permanence, so I liked getting the perspective of celebrating the short-term, the one-off - it feels very refreshing and joyful. ♥
This was my first attempt at writing them together, but I got pretty fascinated by how they could work together! Thank you so much for the kind words. It's terrific to hear that a short piece like this worked like that for you. So thank you!
Aww, Kevin. The romantic who hates Valentine's Day because all the romance is gone, and then he ends up alone anyway. You couldn't stay and snuggle a while, JC?
I like that this is an anti-Valentine's Day story that ends up justifying the anti-ness in the first place.
Thank you very much! Yeah, when the challenge was posted I spent quite a while trying to figure out what to write that wouldn't simply land in a happy ending. It ended up even a bit darker than I intended, I think, but I'm very glad it worked for you.

At some point I'm going to have to tear myself away from staring at your icon.

I thought this was fantastic; it takes a great writer to break your heart in under 800 words.
