Things I like:
  • Unity is kind of nice, actually; the layout feels more optimized for my laptop's widescreen, I'm getting used to the launcher bar, and I haven't had the performance issues that some people have discussed.
  • It fixed the odd sound hardware problem I'd been having, where Ubuntu would discover a generic audio card on boot, and then around ( Read more... )

Well, the good news is that you can change your session to "Ubuntu Classic", which brings back the normal Gnome desktop and panel and everything. But Unity (the 'new and improved' Ubuntu desktop) doesn't have applets, no :(

Haven't used it enough to decide I don't hate it. In principle I like the menu items in the global menu bar; it's a thing I've always liked about the Mac desktop. I do wish they were visible all the time and not just when moused over. There doesn't seem to be a way to customize anything, and the lack of applets is really annoying; I particularly miss the workspace switcher and system monitor.

I'm also getting used to Windows 7, as that's what's on my new work laptop, and it didn't take long at all to decide I hate it.

And "LibreOffice"? That's actually a better name than OpenOffice.org, sadly enough.

Holding down Alt at any time will also show the menubar, and highlight the shortcut key to pull down each menu.

What can't you customize in System Settings (last entry in the power menu in the top-right corner)?

Whose utterly asinine idea was it to put it there?!

Well, you can always hit Alt-F2 and type 'settings'. Or click on the 'Applications' icon in the launcher thingy and type 'settings' there.

I dunno. I had to poke around for a while before I found it. It's an awfully counter-intuitive place for it. But it's also the only menu on the screen. Which is in itself utterly bizarre.

I really expected to switch to classic right away. I've been surprised at Unity's tolerability, still using it.

I encourage you to express your displeasures as bugs on https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu (Ubuntu's bug tracker.)
