Protesting with the Tamils

(from @_M_I_A_I went to the Tamil protest that is blocking University Avenue since Sunday at the American Consulate. I'd say that there were about 500 to 1000 Tamils there chanting non-stop. There was a sea of Tamil Tiger and American flags, with some Canadian flags in between. The protest's emphasis is to ask Obama to get involved. The ( Read more... )

I'm glad you went. Even if it's an entirely futile gesture at this point, and I'm not convinced that it is.

(I'll hopefully get there for a bit on the weekend. In the meantime, I'm getting my kids to film it and make news broadcasts on it.)

Cool stuff! I was thinking about that :) Please linky if they post stuff to youtube.

I don't think it's futile, because the point is not to have the Tigers win (obviously) but to get attention to the plight of Tamils, and in that regard this is a wild success compared to previous efforts. One thing I really wonder about though is what will happen to the Tamil movement in SL and here if/once Prabakharan dies... Everything is so focused on him, and many of his top comrades from a long time have died or been killed in recent years (or switched sides, like Col. Karuna), so there's no clear succession, both to him, and to what form the struggle should take.
