Kingdom A&S..

Well, I'm pre-registered for two items for Kingdom A&S.  The Byzantine Beaded Collar and the Meridian Heraldic Tabard.  Both are going to be display only. While I did base both pieces on extant items, they were both on deadlines and I had too many questions to even answer all of my own questions, let alone a panel of judges, prior to starting the ( Read more... )

I love Maggie's beadwork. Actually, in regards to that beaded byzantine collar - it's the pattern that is for sale for $30. I've been tossing around the idea of buying it, just to see how hard it would be. I do love me some beads!

Well that makes soooo much more sense!
I thought that was awfully cheap for a finished piece!

I really like this idea of a beaded assembly for solving the "just how is that done" issue on the collars and cuffs. Have y'all any idea about those tiny beads being used in the Byz world? - I'm clueless.

My Ravenna mosaic book shows the cuffs particularly not seeming attached to garment fabric - they definitely appear as accessories. Since the collar matches, I'm led to believe that it's a separate piece, too - but what would have enough weight and some drape, but not be too floppy to be a cuff that obviously constricts a fuller sleeve? Composite beadwork could work, I think.

I'd love to see that museum photo.

OK I found a copy of the photo in my computer. I've inserted it into this journal entry. Unfortunately, I made no note as to which museum it came from (must have been in a hurry) nor who took the photo..I need to see if I can find a link in an earlier post - that is what I think happened. Or maybe it's in my labryinth of favorites.

But this should give you an idea of why I think these were collars placed over solid cloth mantles, maybe it was to be graphically effective, maybe it was to protect the jewelry and the fabric from one another.

On the beaded mantle I made, I will say that the pendants along the rim have helped the mantle lay down better.
