I always enjoy reading articles by this Katherine Boo person. She wrote several- the first one I read was about the girlfriend of a major drug dealer in NY, another is about visiting nurse to low income girls in the Louisiana? bayous. I think she won a Pulitzer at some point. One of my friends in social work in Columbia told me that the first article is a very famous one amongst social work students.

I enjoyed the China article very much too. How interesting that the great wall is such a scarcely researched academic subject! The independent research that has grown around it is touching.

Wish I could track down the first Boo articles, then...

Yeah, now doesn't that anti-Japanese song that got converted into an anti-Communist song from when we were kids -- "the 10,000 li changcheng is 10,000 li long" -- make more sense, in an insidious political propaganda way?
