"I know I'm new at all this," he said, trudging through the sand in his military issue boots and the offensively green parka spat at him by the clothes box that morning, "But this isn't exactly the blistering summer day I was expecting."
He lowered himself down beside her, eyes drawn to the little girl playing in the surf. "Hm, at least someone's enjoying it."
"She won't be long, if this keeps up," said Kara, getting stiffly to her feet. Even with Mamet staying, it was hard to sleep a whole night through, and despite the ITF's earlier abuse her muscles were still pissed from tossing and turning all night long.
She eyed his parka with trepidation. "That's a bad sign," she said, "if it's spitting out winter clothes. Climate's changing." And if the sudden gust of cold air against Kara's cheek was any indication, it was changing fast.
"I thought so. It was either this or a wool sweater in the lovely shade of mashed carrots. I thought I ought to take the hint," he said with a wry twist of his lips.
"Beginning of every year since I've been here, the whole island pops right into winter. It lasts about a month and when the snow melts - " Kara's face twisted up. "We get presents." She shrugged. Who didn't like presents?
"But this..." Kara looked up. "This is weird. It's the middle of the day, and -" She shivered, once but hard. "Temperature's dropping fast."
And here they were in the middle of frakking nowhere.
