Quick travel question

Apr 17, 2011 11:42

Okay ladies, I have a very quick question for y'all with regards to my vacation I'm about to go on.

I have never been to an all inclusive so I'm not sure what the norm is when it comes to tipping.  Also, from what I understand, the tipping standards and practices vary from region to region.

I am going to Punta Cana, in the Dominican Republic.

So, I'm ( Read more... )

oh, i wish i could help you... in all my travels, i've only gone to visit friends, so i usually stay with them...

and... i am a cheap tipper. i will admit it. no one tips me for my job, so... *shrugs* yeah, i know... but... *shrugs*

but i think, what you've thought of sounds good for the drinks and housekeeping. as for the restaurant, i guess it depends on what you order and how good the service is.

i say i'm a cheap tipper... however, that isn't entirely accurate. if the food is good, and the service is good, then i am generous... i'm not gonna give a generous tip if the service is lousy. they've not earned it then.

again, yes, i'm a bitch. *G*

so, i say go with what you've thought of.

I'm a big tipper but that's just cuz I used to work in the industry. BUT, since I used to work in the industry I'm also very critical of bad service and will tip very poorly if I the service isn't good.

As for the trip.... I'll probably end up tipping on the high side. Just cuz I have such a guilt thing about third world countries and the way we live here in Canada vs other parts of the world. I know I will have a hard time with having some guy / girl wait on me hand and foot when I know they are getting paid a few bucks a week or something crazy like that. So I'll most likely over-tip to compensate for my guilty conscience... yeah yeah yeah I know... I AM part of the problem

I'm sorry I've never been to an all inclusive resort, so I don't know the protocol. If it were me I'd see what local note is a dollar or a bit less, and tip that to the waitstaff etc. As for restaurants, I would just check what a meal costs when you're over there and take that as a guideline for a tip. I never tip housekeeping on a daily basis, but leave something when I leave, but I can see why you would want to do it daily. I think five dollars a day is too much, that's really a lot of money in comparison. I usually just keep some small notes in my pocket to tip random people who I think deserve it, like the gardener etc. It really depends on the country how I tip. For example when I went to Tanzania, I traveled with a lot of old clothes and left some behind in every place I stayed. It saved me washing, gained room for souvenirs, and I know there was someone out there who whould wear it to threads. I also took a lot of notepads and pens, to leave behind for the staff to give to their kids, because I knew average families didn't have ( ... )

ahhh... notepads and pencils are a great idea.. and they don't take a ton of room in the suitcase.

That'll definitely be on the list.

What you also can do is take a couple of packs paracetamol extra with you and leave those, but then you'll have to make sure to download and print a leaflet in local language to add. Otherwise it isn't really responsible. I did that when I went to Kazachstan, and that really made people happy as they didn't have the means to buy medicine where I was. It weighs hardly anything and doesn't take much room. But I dont know if that is a problem in the Domenican Republic.
