I had a dog that was abused years ago. It took time but eventually he trusted us, and trusted that we would be back.

He's the second dog I've had that was mistreated. Our pitbull, Churchill, was really treated worse and had been taken into police custody and placed under court-ordered protection to get him away from his abuser. The judge allowed us to adopt him and he quickly fit in and was loving and sweet but was a bit overly protective of us and our home. Reagen runs inside when something outside scares him and he runs upstairs when someone comes to the door. It still bothers me that after all this time, he still flinches if someone tries to pet his head. Despite his 'quirks', I wouldn't trade him for anything. He healed my mother's heart after my father's death and makes her smile during particularly difficult times.
