Heaven on Seven does their occasional "Hot as a Mutha" dinner, which is basically the chefs having some fun, making up great meals that aren't even on the menu, and generally torturing the customers by burning their tongues off. ;-) As I love spicy and exotic food anyway, I was thrilled to go and really very impressed at the meal as a whole. The menu was well done, and I'm sharing it here so you, the unsuspecting internet hordes can also appreciate the evening.
It would be appropriate to start off with the Out of Context Quote of the Evening - "It's so good, I don't care how much it hurts, I'm putting it in there!" - Sarah, Robs new fiancée (congrats, kids!).
Disclaimer - All heat indexes and ratings were painstakingly tested (on cats) and determined to be accurate (so far as you know). Any disagreement with said ratings should be ignored.
Hot as a Mutha Dinner; 4-28-2008
Black Pepper and Chili Piquin Strawberry Salad
With Candied Pecans, Parmesan Cheese and a Balsamic Reduction
Heat rating about a 2 of 10.
I didn't think to take a picture of the first course. :-( It was sliced strawberrys on a bed of a few lettuce leaves. Quite tasty.
Chocolate Habenero Soup
A creamy soup of roasted Chocolate Habeneros, Tomato, Roasted Garlic, garnished with shaved Ibarra Chocolate
Heat rating about 4,382 out of 10 -- it was liquid napalm, and at this point I got the tall glass of milk. My face was red, my eyes were tearing, Aimee was laughing at me, but it was a good time nonetheless.
Taco de Chivo
Kid goat braised with Maguey leaves, served on Homemade Yellow Corn Tortillas with Salsa Chiltomate with Red Savina Habeneros.
Heat rating (?) - I was still numb and disoriented from the soup, but it tasted pretty good!
Ghost Pepper Curried Shrimp
Ghost Pepper Curry marinated Shrimp with Coconut Rice
Not that hot relatively, but described as a 'complex flavor', which really did describe it!
Peppered Tenderloin Tip
Served with Cracked Black Pepper Cream, Roasted Potatoes, Shiitake Mushrooms and Serrano Chiles.
Again, not extraordinarily hot in comparison to other stuff, but a VERY good flavor - probably my favorite of the evening.
Bhut Jolokia Pork Tenderloin
Ghost Pepper Rubbed Pork Tenderloin with sautéed Granny-Smith Apples and Ghost Pepper-Apple Glaze
TASTES LIKE BURNING! I ate a good portion of it, though. My stomach was mad at me.
Roasted Jalapeno Cannoli
A rich Cannoli spiked with Roasted Jalapeños, drizzled with a Habenero-Chocolate sauce and Ghost Peppered Chocolate Chips
Very tame compared to the other dishes, plus it was desert, so it was really yummy!
Thanks to Andy for organizing this, and for Chris & Aimee, along with Andy, for inviting me along to partake. I had a great time, and next time they do this (downtown?) I'd be totally up for it again!
I have no idea of the names of the people who work at Heaven on Seven, and especially the main chef, who came out to give us the explanation of each course, in order to give appropriate credit and kudos! I know several of the folks who were there tonight do know and will likely see this posting soon. ;-) Help!
