My history with FP is a long one... I joined way, way, way back when fanfiction.net was still allowing original fiction, and I stayed on when they split off with fictionpress.com. I dropped off the site for several years, concentrating on writing, and recently joined again for some vague reasons I don't remember. Sometimes I feel like pulling everything down, as I'm pretty serious about trying to seek publication. The stories I post on FP aren't any I'd ever consider publishing.
That being said, I did join the_write_away (a sister comm of Plagiarism Haven, only everyone can post stories) quite recently. I haven't been on there long enough to really form relationships, but already with the one story I'm posting I've gotten better feedback than I EVER did on fictionpress.
Maybe you could try TWA? I can't really say for sure how I totally feel about the place, but my experience so far is quite positive.
Whoo! Me too! I didn't want to admit that b/c then I'd have to admit that I've been on fp for almost 10 years, but hi-five! Also, I'd be interested in hearing of your journey to publication, because I've been toying with that idea myself.
Anyway, I'll go check out that comm, thanks for the rec.
Oh man, I joined in 2001... so It'll be ten years in March. Wow, I feel old! XD Especially when I get reviews and check out the profile and realize the reviewer is like 15. It's like, I WAS ON FP WHEN YOU WERE SIX. :P
I've actually queried a few agents, but realized the book I was pitching was pretty terrible and formulaic. I've done a ton of research, and I regularly read author and agent blogs. I hope when I finish editing my current novel (which I'm actually posting on TWA), that I'll be proud enough of it to try and get it published. Especially with the feedback I'm getting on TWA, I feel like I can make it really good.
I know, right? I feel like such an old fogey when I can be like, 'shut up kids, I was there when there was only fanfiction.net and the only place to post stuff was the original anime/manga section!'
Any particular agent blogs you've been following? I'm starting to compile links that have to do with writing (that I would love to share with other writers).
I agree with dreamstrifer. I've been a member of the_write_away since the day it started, and I have made some of my best friends there. The feedback that I have gotten on my stories has been amazing, but the relationships I've formed mean so much more. The moderators are very open and really facilitate in making it a community. Definitely look into it :)
Sorry, I'm jumping in here, but I'd like to think I'm one of the friends lamouette83 (lexiiiii! hiiii!) is talking about. I'm also a mod over there. :P
We have an awesome time at TWA. If you're interested, definitely look into it. We're always happy to get new writers. xD
Haha, I'm not so worried about plagiarism since my stories tend to be not good enough for that, and yes, it totally sounds like you're a pleasant cult. I kid.
p.s. If you're referring to my feral toddler, that's alright, I don't review on fp at all these days. Can I ask how you know how fp me is lj me? I guess you followed my link on my profile to my lj, b/c I don't think any of my posts on lj about fp are public. Just curious :D
I think I joined FP........um, 2008. Yeah. XD Or that was when I started throwing up my serious stories on there - or as serious as I can get. I went by so many pen names. *facepalm* Bleeding White Lily being the first. Now I'm Antiquity Dolls....and that'll probably change eventually too. Sad.
The only reason I stick with FP is due to the community too. :/ But I'm sure there are communities out there. I also write for deviantART which is fun for me. :3 There are a ton of groups you can join on deviantART - for any type of art, visual, graphic, literature...etc. ;3
That's one of the few good writing groups. It helps to put your stuff in as many groups as possible to get more viewers. :3 There are also groups who will crit your stuff and is all about that.

After reading all these comments, I think I'm going to jump over to the write away and see what happens. :)
