Yes. There is a story somewhere on FP called In His Shadows or something which is an almost word-for-word copy of L.J. Smith's Forbidden Game series. And, as you said, a lot of the manga stories on here have clearly taken "inspiration" from other stories. Especially Twilight.
Changing the names does NOT help. This isn't the witness protection program, after all. It's FP, and most of us READ just as much as we WRITE. If you honestly believe that I never would have guessed you'd gotten Fredward Cullmason after reading Twilight, you are seriously deluding yourself. Especially when he immediately falls for the frumptagonist, Smella, after, like, one paragraph.
Even published authors seem to have this problem. Twilight is dangerously similar to Charlaine Harris's Southern Vampire Mysteries and guess which one was published first? (Hint: It wasn't Twilight).
I think that it's all about the degree. I'll use myself as an example so I don't offend anyone more than I already have. I'm writing a fantasy story which is partly inspired by ideas
( ... )
OMG I know what story you're talking about!! I totally tried to rip that girl a new asshole since I was in one of those moods when I came across it (I even looked up and read the fricken manga (which was... bad, and I wasn't even gonna look at that except I knew her story sounded really familiar) and now it's a jdrama even) and the most the girl said was like, 'I was inspired, not my fault.' I should've asked her point blank what about it inspired her exactly; Inspiration can come from characters, setting, plot, etc., but when it's all of the above, that's just... more than just inspiration.
I agree, she doesn't get criticism either, since her view is that since it's a manga it doesn't count since a manga and the written word are two different things, because they obviously don't go through the same creative process just ends up coming out in different forms. -flat stare- I wish someone would turn my stories into a graphic novel without my permission because they're different, see what happens.
Haha- Oh man, this also reminds me- she accused me of 'skimming' over her work since by not reading thoroughly, I would then be able to tell that the wasn't plagiarizing by NOT copying word for word...? And then she told me that obviously I was judging her by the first 2 chapters and not the full 4 which were out when I got to it.
Yeah, it's people like this that is just sort of a lost cause and no matter what you say or do nothing will get to them.
Which proves your plagiarizing point since the first two chapters were lifted from the manga and she pretty much admits it when she accuses you of having only read those parts, lol.
And yeah, I find that when people know they're doing wrong they'll defend their asshat behaviour to the end and even twist it around so you're supposedly in the wrong.
I totally agree with you. This issue needs to be addressed more. I see authors who got 'inspired' over the plot, and when you point it out, they throw a tantrum about how the dialogue was theirs anyway so they technically didnt plagiarized, even though the plot was obviously the same (see Clavel's "A Sweet Inducement")
To be honest, when I see a story that was obviously "inspired" by a manga/anime, I immediately just skip it. I don't even bother commenting to the author. Sure, they can claim the glory all they want, but once they try to get it 'publish', then it's their problem now if they get sued.
That's the author/story I had to stop reading, I wasn't going to put it on blast, but since you did already, LOL, I fully had to look up the drama and I honestly felt so betrayed, LOL.
I'll give people a chance if they were inspired by it because sometimes the inspiration is more of a 'what if' situation and it's a totally different idea/base. It's when, like you mentioned with Clavel, they steal the whole thing, and just cause they change the lines doesn't make it unique since the scenes were the same.
I admit that I haven't been reading much on fp lately, but I still do skim through summaries that may look appealing. I do is a pattern of many jdrama plots being taken. It's kind of annoying. If you want to use a jdrama/anime/manga's idea...there's fanfiction for that! FP is more about originality and unleashing your own imagination.
Sure, there are ideas that may be similar - but argh. It still gets annoying.
I've watched a few episodes of the jdrama 'Absolute Boyfriend' .. so it's kind of annoying that they're writing another story based on it. I mean, if you're copying an idea - you might as well not even put it under the 'manga' category. Haha.
" On the other hand, people who say 'I was inspired by Hana Yori Dango/B.O.D.Y/whatever' get a pass from me although I probably won't read it anyway." <- same for me.
There was one story that's extremely popular that reflected a Harry Potter fic I read ages ago. Basically, boy and girl wake up after a night of drunken debauchery and realize they're married. And it was funny because her "original" characters were made to look exactly the same as the HP characters. There were too many similarities for it to be coincidence. It was unfortunate, however, that the the HP author had to take down her story and reupload it elsewhere (and thus the original date of upload was now later than the one uploaded at fictionpress).
I made a review, citing all the similarities, and the author deleted it. Fun times.
