Thoughts on the death of Christ

To my shame, as a youngster I rebelled with the "Did I ask him to die for me?" line. It seems that every year I see another way in which that line is truly horrible: the first of course was - did I ask the many soldiers who died for my country's freedom to do so? The firefighters and other emergency crews who have fallen? The doctors and other medical practioners who have died from diseases caught from the patients they treated? What of the scientists who have died trying to master the world that threatens us? The list goes on and on.

Everything I have and am I owe to those who have done the right thing, and paid for that with their lives. Jesus was and is the greatest of those heroes; that He had to die to defeat our sins would not be a surprise, if we gave due gratitude to all those who have paid the ultimate price for us. But then, if we were capable of doing so unassisted, He wouldn't have had to die for us.
Still, I am glad that this year Anzac day falls within Easter, so that these awe inspiring sacrifices stand side by side.
