The first is the monstrous ignorance of history of most contemporaries, that makes it next to impossible to explain that the New Testament is a collection of contemporary, reliable historical documents; and second, the very concept of "belief system",

CS Lewis discusses this when talking about his experiences when talking at RAF bases. He found that because their One True God was 'science!' saying that there is a science of textual analysis that can be used to confirm the accuracy of documents was sufficient to get past that hurdle.
