I used to be a nominal anti-capitalist, until I realized that a market economy is really the best system we have so far, and that I owed much to it. I also was trapped in the false dichotomy of assuming that capitalism equaled a tyranny of selfishness and the right wing conception of an unfettered market. Yet, I have come to see both the markets and governments as two halves of a coin that need each other, and in fact developed in tandem.
Marxists tend to see anything apart from Marxism as a veneer over class warfare. It's a ridiculous oppression narrative that, as you point out, likely stems from middle class angst in part.
