Whittaker Chambers on Ayn Rand

Dec 24, 2004 07:24

Whittaker Chambers was the man who broke away from the American Communist Party in the late forties and denounced Alger Hiss as a Communist spy. Well, now there's one book I'm never likely to read - not even out of morbid curiousity. I browsed through some websites about Ayn Rand, and slogged through some of the basic FAQs. Above all, I found it all unimaginably boring. How anyone could ever find any passion to follow this stuff is beyond me. Some of it sounds almost sensible - to such an extent, that you have to wonder why anyone needs to write a book or create a "philosophy" about it. As for the rest, it seems to be an attempt to justify - well, what, I'm not entirely sure. A rather dull existance, as far as I can tell. (And now that I've checked up on it, I'm pretty sure that at least one person I know must be a Rand follower. It's just the sort of utter tripe she'd find incredibly interesting.) Yawn. Her characters sound like Mary Sues. Someone should spork them.

Out of curiousity, what does "spork" mean? I am still coming across fandom words I do not understand...

Well, I got the word from deleterius, a community dedicated to making fun of Mary Sues in Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings fanfiction. Basically, to "spork" something means to take the piss out of it, using a basic template, with things such as CulpritAuthor Name, Sue Name, Sue species, annoying characteristics, annoying special abilities, etc.

And that reminds me, Natalie... a photo of you in that Mary Sue costume would count as a very welcome Christmas gift. 8-)
