WHAT ASSISTANT DEAN CERVANTES SAID TO BENJAMIN AND MORDECAI RUSH

“Well, gentlemen,” said the Assistant Dean, a little less smoothly than he had been speaking so far, “you are a couple of idiots, aren’t you?”

“Mr. Assistant Dean -“ Mordecai tried to answer.

Heh. This is just a clever gambit to get me to reveal whether there is any truth to your speculations, isn't it? ;)

A cute (though clearly apocryphal) story. You got their personalities pretty well. And I am of course quite flattered to have people writing fanfic of my fanfic.

There's one small "canon" problem, though: Dean Cervantes is the Dean of the Eighth Grade. The Rashes would have been called to the office of the Dean of the Tenth Grade. (Whom I have yet to name, though I do actually have a name in my notes.)

I can't imagine why I was under the impression that the Rashes were with Alexandra and Ms.Shirtliffe when they went to see the Dean. I was wrong, obviously, but the whole story comes from that mistake. As for trying to make you say anything about the next several years - would I do a thing like that?

...especially since I'm quite aware that there would be no point...

I'm glad you thought the voices were OK. I was particularly worried about the twins' dialect, since I'm no good even with English or Italian dialects, and I usually have someone beta my stuff if I try.

The Rashes' dialect did look a little more Okie than Ozarker to me, but I've never had a real Ozarker critique how I write the dialect -- I doubt they'd be terribly impressed with my authenticity.

One thing my own betas told me was to limit how much I try to write out dialect phonetically. (I was originally writing Innocence with a much stronger accent than her sisters, and replacing "my" with "mah" and "I" with "ah," etc. Turns out, very few authors ever do that, and for good reason -- it just really annoys the readers.)

I hated Huck Finn for that reason.

Neat fic, fpb, well done.

minor flint: the fact that no less than four Ozarkers are at Charmbridge for the very first time in history.

5 Ozarkers, don't forget Innocence.
