Hmm, well there is the 'alternate universe' tag LOL. My RL friend dejla writes some seriously awesome fanfic, and she has a couple of characters who she's placed in several different fandoms--the background varies according to the universe, but they're the same characters with the same names and all. She's posted quite a bit of stuff on her LJ, she doesn't write in the Potterverse but her writing is so good I'll read it and enjoy it even if I'm not familiar with the source material.
