#2 is interesting. I didn't know that (about Europe's distractions, I mean) although the news seems to make it clear that the bulk of the anti-Israel protests have been by angry, violent Muslims. It's unsettling, to say the least, how utterly unsurprising it is that synagogues and such have been firebombed in France.
As for the conflict itself - my amateur understanding is that Israel holds most of the cards here, and it ain't over til it's over. Regardless of Palestinian civilian casualties. (Although I find a lot of the 'disproportionate' arguments to be unsettling as well - apparently Israel should be apologizing that more Israelis aren't dead?)
