No doubt a stupid question, but I'd rather look stupid than be ignorant - which Charter?

In the Middle Ages, each Guild was a chartered body, with a special law embodying its rights and duties. People did in fact fight for the rights of the Guild as if for their own country. But Chesterton means something deeper - the "charter" of freedom which makes Adam a human being, the human quality and value of mankind.
