Debate: Furries and Sex

Apr 13, 2005 15:26

Is the subculture of furry intrinsically sexual in nature?I'm not asking what furry originally was (i.e., a simple interest in anthropomorphics), but rather how it exists today. Feel free to debate the nature of this subculture. Your personal perspectives, insights and experiences are sought. Debate amongst yourselves is also highly encouraged ( Read more... )

The way I see furry, it focuses on the physical and instinctual aspects of human or animal nature... it's very much a freudian 'id' thing. Furry seems to argue: "If it feels good, then it must have evolved that way because it's good for us, therefore, we should do it." And since sex obviously feels good and is directly connected to that mode of survival, well--yes, I would say that furry IS intrinsically sexual.

I'm probably both over- and under-thinking that, but that's the way I personally think about the furry fandom, and it's one of the reasons I try not to be a part of it much. Almost all the subcultures of furry that I've ever seen are fetish-based, and they do follow the idea of "it feels good so it must be right, for me personally if not for everyone". It's kind of a philosophical hedonism, and I think that makes it inextricably tied to sex.

Of course not all furs are ruled entirely, or even primarily, by this--but I think it's the defining characteristic of the furry fandom.

I don't think furries are anymore 'sexually' oriented than any other group/subculture on the 'net. I think the way the furries present it makes it easier to find, or more 'on the surface' so to speak. I think it's more of a lack of shame, or too much openess that probably leads to this. In other groups, it's sometimes hard to find the pr0n within, but with the furries, it's not difficult at all.

In a word: no. There's plenty of furs for who being furry does not have sexual aspects.

Furry has a sexual spin on it. But I guranatee you if you go to a Ren. Faire, a Star Trek convention, or any subcultrue for that matter, there's sex in it. "Fan Fic" is common to all genres. "I'd sleep with Legolas" or "I'd sleep with Leia" or "I'd sleep with Ongowai of Hareosug" is common.

Furs just wear it more publicly. I think we're not as ashamed of it, but we also try to make it cuter. It's not masturbation, its "Pawing". It's not sex, it's "Yiffing". I also think that we're not as repressed, we're not afraid to show some affection for each other. Some take advantage of it, but for most of us we know a hug is a hug.

Then again, it just might be that we all think that a rabbit with bit tits is just humorous....

I agree with everyone above - furry is both sexual, and not ( ... )
