Laini is camped out by the front door. Almost literally, there is a pile of stuff that looks like camping gear to one degree or another, all hitched onto a folded metal frame. She is sitting by it, in jeans, a sweater, and hiking shoes.
The outfit will probably change many times to suit her whim, however. (Just wait until Tomb Raider.)

He gestures to his small pack. "I could have brought more gear, but I have no clue what we'll be going into, so I brought the bare necessities and figured you could tell me what else we need."

He turns to face the portal again. "Even if you had to go through six of these it's more convenient than rush hour traffic at the shuttleport. We need to hurry up and duplicate magic with tech."
Reply
"Last few hundred years they've pushed it farther and farther away- and that means all of Underhill as well."

An adventurous fluttery thing settles gently on Duo's head, the buzzing 'wings' blowing his bangs.

Laini's ears flatten, and she faces the portal in the ruins and starts activating it. Third one down on the left, and the glow climbs up both columns and fills the space between.

He grins.

"She didn't believe I was a Fox." Laini is still amused, and with a quiet laugh, they troop through the portal-
It is still daytime, though the light is heavily filtered through the thick branches and leaves overhead. The light is in shades of green and flickering shadow, even as their feet (and the feet of the carryall) thud on rough wooden planks. They are up on a platform high up in the branches, circling the trunk of a tree as big around as a house. More railings and bridges link to other platforms in other trees, with small hut-houses as well. The portal tree, however, is set farther from the others, and the activity of the inhabitants is rather too far to see clearly.
Laini walks around the tree. There are several portals here, each set into where a huge branch had been cut from the trunk, leaving a hollow as the tree healed around it. Signage in an odd language was carved into the bark over each one, and the tell-tale circles were set along each side.

"They having some kind of party down there? I think I smell smoke."

She starts on the next portal, activating the second one down on the left side. The glow fills the hollow in the trunk (still more than enough room for them both and the carryall to pass through at the same time), and Laini looks back at him.
"Though, once they figure you're not food, they're a rather cute bunch."

Duo shakes his head and swings down to the portal, now acclimated enough to step through first.

And they step through, the carryall following. The ground underfoot is now rough, and slick- volcanic rocks wet with sea spray.
"Watch your step."
The portal here is in a natural rock arch, carved by the sea itself even though the water level has lowered so that the floor of the arch is above the water. Mostly. A thin path hugs the cliffside along the edge of a grotto, the water in it deep and blue.
"We got a bit of a walk here, next portal is near the town- if you can call it that. I'll put some illusions on us, but slipping in and out shouldn't be that hard."

Then he jerks to a halt, leaning against the cliffside to keep his balance. "Are those...mermaids?"
He strains his eyes to see, watching one playfully splash another with a long, elegant tail.

"Why, Duo. I didn't know you were into fish."

The cries of gulls echo slightly as they wheel overhead.
"But besides the mermaids, looks like Earth."
