Tech Advice...

Okay, for those of you that own HDTVs, I need some expert opinions. As some of you might know, for a while now, I've been absolutely needing to purchase an HDTV (preferably a 32" in size) and for a while now, I've kind of been torn apart as to whether to stick with a regular 720p or a full 1080p. Believe me, I know the difference between the two ( Read more... )

that depends on the price difference, really... if you're in the market for a TV that will last you for much of your life, why skimp? get the 1080p in that case. but if you're planning on trading it out or selling it (etc.) in the next few years, go for the 720p.

That's what I was thinking. I'm not looking to trade my TV in for a while now, so perhaps I should go the extra mile and take on the 1080p. I just have to find some way to budget for it.

Technically, if the TV you get is a 32", there IS no true 1080p for it because of the resolution itself. It may SAY 1080p, but true 1080p is only on televisions 40" and bigger, due to the physical dimensions of the television.

Regardless, on a TV at 32", you'd have to be sitting almost practically with your nose to the screen to really tell the difference, still because of the native resolution that's coded into things, even on a ps3 game. But since most movies are 720p formatted to begin with, unless you're planning on collecting only blu ray movies, it doesn't even matter. I have a 37" 720p, ps3 and blu ray movies, and it's still so sharp I can't believe it. But if I had a bigger TV, I'd want 1080p for sure

Ah, I disagree with you on that one. I have seen a 32" 1080p in action tested next to a 42" 1080p of the same brand and series (Sony BRAVIA) by use as a PC monitor and both of them displayed the exact same resolution at 1920x1080. I even looked up some of these on several forums, and they all confirm that yes, a 32", as well as a 37", can in fact get 1920x1080. Where have you seen that it's not possible so I can confirm that?

Standing in front of those monsters every day, I honestly can't tell any difference between the 720p and the 1080p. I have a 720p myself, and I'm really happy with it. They do tend to be less expensive, yes. If you're willing to buy from Walmart, you can sometimes get cheaper prices on the website than you can in the store. And with site-to-store, you don't pay any shipping on it. You just have to wait a few days for it to get there.

There truly is a huge difference. Everything's even clearer and sharper in 1080p (in most cases you have to get up extremely close to see it, but I'm one that can point out major differences from afar, though I don't know how...maybe I have that much of a keen eye).

I'm aware of ordering online from Walmart. I've done that before. Two years back when I got my PSP (which I lost fairly recently) I ordered that online along with a game I couldn't find on the store shelves. I plan on getting my new HDTV using that method to be honest.
