kenshin works pretty well in reverse of the shounen formula, i always thought - it's not about a person striving to ascend the ladder of strength/ability/power, but a person who starts out at the top and with great determination makes his way down, back to his soul and peace. it's a much rarer sight.

(i love it so much; i discovered it in my first university year, and almost blew a first exam sessions over the kyoto ark, i was so mesmerized).

Good point! I was thinking of the "fighting tournament" aspect, which the Kyoto Arc especially does in all but name --- but damn it does it so well!

I went to university back when anime clubs were a thing and my club showed it in maybe my 3rd year or so. It's been way too long since I watched it...
