So I'm still watching the Amnesia anime for no good reason. We're past boyfriend #4 --- sadly we didn't get to see her knee him in the groin and call the cops, but at least we're done with the creep --- and into boyfriend #5-and-implicitly-final who actually seems to know what the hell is even going on so we have some chance of actually getting

Yeaaaah, Final Fantasy VII and VIII had pretty bland protagonists for what I imagine were those reasons, but I think as they advanced their technology, they really wanted to make a movie-like experience and really couldn't get away with that anymore. Chrono Trigger also comes to mind; there were so many fascinating characters, but Crono never said anything, not even when you selected him for your party at the End of Time. I think he still ended up coming across as pretty cool (he did a lot of cute things for just being a mute), but I certainly didn't think he was "me". And when they put that in an anime, I agree that it just makes for a boring character.
