Monthly anime marathon: Trigun

(Something besides my fanfic!)

So I just finished my promised-to-self monthly foray into back-catalog anime, sort of a semi-marathon. This month I actually picked it in advance, once I remembered that I had, so I just got done watching Trigun. My sense is that it's one of the classics, and I recall in particular a friend who was into it years ( Read more... )

I'd have to ask....

Are we talking the original Bubblegum Crisis? This?

Or are we talking the absolute nonsense of Bubblegum Crisis 2040? This?

Because oh my christ there is a world of difference.

The original BGC is one of the conerstones of the cyberpunk genre period and harkens back to Kubrick with Blade Runner. The original BGC's release in the states was instrumental in getting anime licensed on American shores in the first place.

Not to get all huffy at you. LOL. Sorry, I had a moment. Sure BGC looks 'old school' but the storytelling is timeless and top notch. Just like Captain Harlock, Space Ship Yamato. People have written college theses on Harlock alone.

Original. Never saw 2040. And yes, I respect that it's a classic, and I don't hate it or anything --- it was one of the first anime I ever saw in like the early 90s and probably one of the things that got me into it (along with Nausicaa and Totoro), but for me personally it's a relic of those days when my sister and I watched BGC and Project A-Ko and the first half of Dominion Tank Police over and over again because that was all we could freaking get. Trying to re-watch it after I'd seen NGE was actually rather humbling, and the story is probably darker than I would pick if the selection hadn't been so constrained. For whatever reason, old-school anime art that takes me back to that particular moment can feel noticeably unpleasant for me to run into (though hardly a deal-breaker).
