I have never been able to think of the day as one of mourning; I have never quite been able to feel that half-masted flags were appropriate on Decoration Day.  I have rather felt that the flag should be at the peak, because those whose dying we commemorate rejoiced in seeing it where their valor placed it.  We honor them in a joyous, thankful, ( Read more... )

He's one of my favorite poets. The first part of the poem,or part of it, gets quoted every November 11 here in Canada,but the last part is often left out of even printed versions.

Just noticed that the linked to version mistakes "contemn" for "condemn."
A common error,but I thought it was just A Canadian Thing,since that verse is essentially part of our oral culture.
But the Brits do it too!
