mavisgrizltits and Juz have been here for nearly the last week and we have been having much lovely relaxing catching-up time as well as occasionally venturing out to see the sights of Manchester (and organise Chinese visas). Huzzah for visitors!

And now, not one but TWO book memes!

From nicked_metalThe Big Read reckons that the average adult has only read 6 of the top ( Read more... )

Well, of the first list I have read 27. mawaridi has read 30. Obviously she is more well read than I.

From the second list, I haven't done a count, but I know what most of them look like. :)

Ah, but is that how you judge them? ;)

I can't remember what the second list represents -- it might be bestselling books at stores, which would make sense if you recognise most of them. There's quite a few on the list that I've never heard of!

Wow, I'm surprised that I've read some of that list that you haven't! You really should read The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks. I'm reading all his stuff at the moment, but that one is his first and best so far. I remember reading it - I was alphabetising our books and I was curious about it so started reading. Then suddenly it was getting too dark to read and hours had passed (and I'd read half the book without realising it).

My tally is 30, with a few partials. I've certainly read something by Vikram Seth, and I think it was A Suitable Boy. Not sure. There's also no indicator for if you hated the book! We studied Catch 22 in year 9, but it was way too young to understand it and enjoy it, I thought - most of us hated it and I was one of few that actually finished it. We studied the entire Lord of the Rings in year 7 - that was a bit much!

I recently read The Player of Games, which is the first Banks novel I've managed; thought it was quite a good book, though not unputdownable. I tried Consider Phlebas a few years ago and didn't really take to it. But those are both from his SF output; I'll have to try The Wasp Factory and see!

Have you read An Equal Music? It's the only one of Vikram Seth that I've read, but I did really enjoy it; and if it's not the one that you've read then you should! I haven't yet worked up the courage to attempt A Suitable Boy...
