Not Happy

Could someone please explain to me exactly why every single security update since June has wiped my address book upon reboot? This is seriously, seriously starting to piss me off. I've searched a variety of forums and the apple "support" area and no one else seems to be having this problem - either that or my google-fu has failed. *wants to cry*

I have a colleague in my class who is a Mac guy. If you don't mind, I will query him about your problem.

Thanks so much. Any ideas at this stage are fab. I popped into the mac store today and talked to one of their guys and he didn't really have a clue. . .

Security update for your browser? For your operating system? For some other application?

Hm.. strange. No, I haven't seen that, nor has James complained about it.

Is he still running Tiger? I thought he had switched over to Leopard?

Hmm. I just loaded up that security update, but haven't rebooted yet. Think I'll take a backup of my address book first; you never know.

On the other hand, I've never had any problems with security updates wiping anything.

I take it you know the basics of of simple address book backup and restore? (File->Export->Address Book Archive; similar for Import)

I don't know what to suggest, though, diagnosis-wise. The address book data is, I think, just stored as files in ~/Library/Application Data/Address Book, and I can't see why any security update would even look in there, much less change anything.

I sync with .Mac, so I could get stuff back from there, and I've got Time Machine running, which I'm guessing could also restore all the Address Book entries easily, plus Mozy will be backing up it all up off-site, too. I guess I'm in a better position than most people when it comes to not losing my contacts, but that's only because of how annoyed I've been in the past when other tools have lost them (just not OS X. Yet.)

Fortunately, this time I had a back-up in place (once bitten, twice shy and all that), but this is going to get seriously old if it continues - and more importantly is making me think twice about getting an iphone.

That said, R mentioned to me that my computer seems to be misbehaving lots since our move, so I'm wondering if something got rattled about bit more than it should. Am seriously considering taking it in to the apple store for a once over. . .

I would definitely take it in. They can get temperamental if something goes funny... I had a few issues with my G4, but only after a few years, and it seems like everyone else's was fine. I do, however, seem to recall that techno-entropy was a shared talent of ours.
